Really, not too painful a job. My major issue was the bottom bolt that holds the P/S pump to the bracket was totally rusted. Had to remove the bracket with the pump attached (which I do NOT reccomend!), then took an acetylene torch to the bugger to get it out.
I left the serp belt off overnight, with nothing compressing the tensioner. This was obviously a mistake - the tensioner wouldn't budge when I went to re-compress it when it was time to put the belt back on. It looked like the tensioner was bent in the middle - I wedged a wrench between the tensioner and one of the pulleys to "straighten it out", and got lucky. It still works and passes all the normal tests.
Serp belt area is now practically silent.
Turns out the whine which I had thought was my alternator was the p/s pump.
Steering feels way lighter now than before the old pump started making noise. Could be down to new fluid (Valvoline SynPower) as well. I also notice the engine revs easier than before the old pump started making noise.
All these are warning signs I should have been more attuned to, but because they increased so gradually, I didn't notice unti the problem was eliminated.
Anyway, there it is. Thanks to all for sharing your knowledge, and for the pump offers!
Cheers,
--jeff
