if you put the switch in the uppermost position and close the hatch, the light doesn't go off?
the switch (indeed the whole light assy) is a standard one used on many models as a dome light. the bottom-most switch position is just an evolutionary hold-over.
switch in the middle, light is always off.
switch in top position, light is on with hatch open. light goes off with the hatch closed.
i didn't trust that mine went off until i took the cargo cover off and watched it a few times. now the switch stays all the way up and i trust that the light continues to go off when the hatch is closed.
i imagine the ground is switched in the latch. white is hot? black is ground? maybe someone reran the ground wire, or perhaps it's pinched in the hinge area. i think there is a mercury switch in the latch itself. at this point i might pull the latch out and see what's up with it.
