5th and reverse difficult on manual '95 9000cs

I researched the threads here on this one and there seems to be a few schools of thought on this. But I did not read of anyone having trouble with both 5th and reverse. I need to pull the sleeve up to put it in 5th, just like one does when shifting into reverse. Does this suggest a narrower set of things to explore?
Thank you
Tim
