so, here's my situation:
i have a 1993 9000cse turbo with manual transmission that i really love. it has 260k miles on it and the last 100k are mine. i've done many repairs in the last 50k miles - clutch, slave cylinder, heater core, timing chain, radiator, etc... i'm lucky to have a mechanic who does side work for me for about $20 an hour. the interior is pretty chewed as i've used this car to haul musical gear to and from gigs over the years. anyhow, the transmission has kicked the bucket and my mechanic told me to have a funeral service for the car as it is an ex-vehicle (unless you REALLY like driving around in first gear.)
so, i went out and bought a new car (06 jetta tdi) but i still have the saab in the garage. i have a friend or two who would help me put a new tranny in if i wanted to or maybe even help me rebuild the old one. i'm thinking i might be better off just buying a rebuilt one from eriksson industries but the thing is, do i put a $1500 transmission in a $1000 car? do i look for a used tranny with 150k miles on it for $800-1000? money is tight right now with buying a new car and all but i have a little saved up. is it time to give up? i don't really need two cars but i really don't want to see this one go. argh!!
