I have a 88 9000T that I got from my brother that ever since he had it had lots of clatter. Has 239k km on it, 180k or so when he got it. Anyway when replacing a leaking rocker cover last winter I noticed the oil feed tubes and their plastic connecting bits so replaced all these as I was suspicous of the o-rings that I knew were there. The car sat until recently and I had only started it briefly once or twice, the clatter was still there.
Anyway, once I drove it a month ago the clatter has disappeared.
I had an 88 non-turbo with 375k km on it and it was quiet, no engine work ever. Perhaps the turbo has the same oil pump so the extra plumbing drops the pressure enough that new oil rings for the oil feed tubes makes a difference? Just a theory.
