OK, here goes - I will have missed lots out but it may help.
Manual Aero and manual '98 CSE have 225 bhp, other FPT "full pressure turbo" manuals and automatics have 200bhp, or less for LPT "low pressure turbo" models.
Aero, '98 CSE and (in US market) Anniversary CSEs (1997, mostly) have slightly stiffer/lower suspension, but not agressively so. Plenty of after-market options, from Saab's own "road handling kit" (Aero-ish spec) onwards.
Aeros have 16" wheels, also found on many other cars depending on market and how they were specced. Anything 17" was fitted by the owner.
Aeros and Anniversaries have smoother body kit/spoiler in body colour. Aero seats lovely but don't suit everyone - they can be added to any car if you hunt down a set.
And of course, all engines can be modified very easily to give more output than a standard Aero anywyay, via 3" exhaust, ECU etc..
You are right to look at 1996-98 - Saab'd had ten years of product development, courtesy of their willing victims. I understand the later 5-speed boxes are nicer to use.
Finally, if you type "CSE vs Aero" into the Search box, you will get lots of stuff along the same lines!
By the way, lots of other Matthews on this board, might like to use something different so everyone can keep track! Bill
