Given that the youngest 9000 is 8 years old, it makes sense to go with a '95 to '98 car, IMHO. Less miles, fewer winters, more solid build quality, more kinks worked out.

I have a '95 CS auto that my daughter drives and my daily ride is a '96 CSE 5 spd. I got the '95 at 138K and put a grand into it (plus tires), as it was on a major maintenance cycle. Still needs a few things but is a very good car. The '96 came to me at 91K almmost 3 yrs ago with a great service history and aside from one 9K issue (heater core) and normal car things like exhaust it has been painless to own. I do frequent 780 mile trips and it is marvelous and gets 28-30 mpg. Have even hit 32 on one trip.

Both cars are solid and I'd take 'em anywhere. If you know and understand the needs of these cars (and what's likely to become a problem) and deal with issues right away you'll have a great car for what you are doing and it should last a long time. Don't hesistate to pay extra for a clean car with records. It pays off in the long run, even if it just puts off some typical repairs.

FWIW, I came to the '96 out of a beloved '84 C900. Never looked back.
