adaption run

What is the proper method for adaption run? I just picked up my '95 aero 5 speed from the shop today - I had a full turbo back JT 3 inch exhaust installed and it already has an upgraded ECU and a K&N filter. I thought the adaption run was supposed to be 4th gear or higher running at 4000+ rpms for 5 seconds. That seems almost impossible as I was already doing almost 100 mph when I hit 4000 rpms in 4th and I chickened out. The way it was accelerating I am guessing I would be doing 150 by the time 5 seconds was up. Can I use 3rd gear? maybe my tach is off? Thanks.
