The basic 9000 body was designed in 1984, and first saw production in 1985. By the mid '90s, the basic chassis was hard to keep in production. The advent of multipe airbags was one - the CS body style that came along in '93 showed that - in order to have a passenger airbag, they had to delete the glove box. You can't just add an airbag; it has to be part of the design structure. With the need for side/head airbags, the structure just wasn't there to support it. I also believe that the amount of manual labor to build the car was pricing it out of the market. That's what killed the 900; the design was such that it wasn't adaptable to automatic production techniques. The longer the chassis is on the production line, and the more hands that have to touch it, the more expensive it is to make.

In terms of space, a 9-3 isn't close. But the 9-3 wasn't intended as a replacement for the 9000 -it's a 900 replacement.

The 9000 is the largest car that Saab has ever built (I'm ignoring the Chevy 9-7). The 9-5 is smaller. Slightly narrower, slightly shorter. The 9-5 sedan is quite nice, but does have limited access via the trunk due to the fixed rear window. The 9-5 wagon is as close as you can get. My wife and I have done extensive side-by-side comparisons. The 9-5 wagon is slightly narrower - not by a lot, but a few inches. In fact, the largest 9000 was the original design; our '92 9000 is bigger inside than our CS body style '97 CSE.

The backseat of a 9-5 feels a lot like a 9000, and the 9-5 cockpit is pretty similar to a 9000.

I'm still driving 9000s because as my wife says, it is her perfect car. Big on the inside, small on the outside. At some point we won't have decent 9000s available to us, and the nearest equivalent is a 9-5 wagon. As wagons go, it's pretty nice.

Here is some heresy - in terms of inside space, believe it or not a Mazda 6 hatchback is about as big inside as a 9000. I was quite surprised. In fact, we think the hatchback (not sedan) is bigger than the Mazda 6 wagon. That is just size; I don't think the Mazda has the same quality of materials, and the interior styling reminds me of a garish boom-box.
