...don't know why the smoke would manifest itself. However, check all your vacuum connections, as a vacuum leak can cause the engine to go rich to compensate. Rich enough, and you can sometimes get sooty exhaust as a result.

If a vacuum hose happened to pop off its nipple someplace, maybe that was your "boonk" sound; and certainly LHM would follow.

If not a vacuum issue, my experience has been that if the car will start without LHM, and later trips LHM due to throttle input, it's usually the throttle body to blame.
