From what I can tell, the adjustment is pretty straightforward - you make sure the tranny is in neutral, loosen the nut just forward of the shift lever, and move the shifter to neutral. Then tighten the nut. I'll have to check my Haynes 9000 manual to see if it has more.
If the parking pawl in the tranny is sticking, that doesn't respond to outside influence.
I bet your next question is how to get to the adjusting nut. I'm sure I'd done a post or two in the past on that. I'll check.
