This is to update the engine replacement of wife's daily ride 94cs which threw a rod two Friday's ago.
I picked up an 80k mile engine from Corona, NY Friday. It was damaged during handling. I was wary of that when the junkyard told me they are going to start removing it out of the car hearing I was coming that afternoon. Their hired hands need to be supervised closely. I learned that four months ago when I bought a 95 engine for my 94cde. I was with the guy who removed it on a Saturday morning.
Indeed when I arrived a not so small disaster has occurred. The removed engine was dropped from a forklift. It tumbled to the ground cracking the intake and valve cover. I decided to still take it thinking I could salvage parts I removed from the old one getting $100 concession.
But when I had the engine loaded on the company pickup heading home on the BQE, something on the engine in the rear view mirror caught my eyes. I was shocked. Those guys severed the main wiring harness. The wiring harness to the ecu was cut by a bolt cutter.
After putting the engine on the stand and cleaning it, more damages are revealed. But the block and head are sound. At least I'd hope so. Following is the list,
1) cracked valve cover,
2) carcked intake manifold and throttle body,
3) cut wiring harness,
4) cracked rear plate.
But it has a good turbocharger. So I think it is still a bargain at $500. It also means the car may be sidelined longer because I need to get an intake manifold gasket. The new clutch disc is on order. It should be here Wednesday or Thursday. The engine has some varnish on the non-moving parts but no cludge.
I may seem gung-ho having had the drive train of every 9k I owned removed at least once. But I have never attempted a head gasket job on my 9k's (none needed, fingers crossed). I have never even touched the bolts and nuts on the piston big end or the main bearing. So I am still puzzled why the 94cs turbo threw a rod. When I dismantled the crank shaft from the bad engine, I found the big end bearing nuts on No, 4 piston also somewhat loose. Those on No. 1 are of course gone. If you could call it an indication, it is on 9,000 mile of the 10,000 mile oil change schedule for the car. No I did not check oil. May be I should have. But this car doesn't burn oil. The turbocharger shaft has no play whatsoever. On this new engine I checked all big end nuts (35 ft-lbs) and main bearing nuts (81 ft-lbs). They were all tight.
I used the timing cover and rear plate from the bad engine. Each has a seal I put in exactly a year ago.
It may seem unnecessary, but I plan to replce the o-ring on the oil pickup tube and those on the transfer tube from the oil filter to the block. There are two on the transfer tube. Anyone know a source for metric o-ring in bulk?
