When was the last time the system was bled? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 3 Aug 2006 05:01:23 In Reply to: 96 brake bleeding - air bubbles, SteveJ, Wed, 2 Aug 2006 17:59:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That air could come from a variety of sources. If someone had done work on the brakes (replaced a caliper) and not completely bled the system, there would be some air in it. And as the fluid ages, it absorbs water from the air. And that water does entrap air. Those little bubbles tend to find each other and form bigger ones. And when you vacuum bleed, by definition you are dropping the pressure. Any air trapped in the fluid comes out of solution under low pressure (why water boils in a vacuum).
Would I worry about it? Well, I always recommend a complete brake flush every 2-3 years. Not just bleed the air, but a replacement of the fluid. Old fluid has air, water, grit, corrosion products, and maybe even Jimmy Hoffa floating about. You won't feel a little air, but it's more a sign that the fluid is getting old.
