I also have an '88 9kt, same car as yours. The fuel light comes on with 1.5 gallons remaining in the tank. I also have a partially functioning fuel gauge in that car and have relied on the light. However, some day the light may burn out (except I don't really drive around a lot with the light on), or perhaps malfunction. One way to answer the question is to ask whether you filled your tank completely, and how many gallons went in. If you did fill, and you put in the full capacity of the tank, you have your answer. If you didn't, then fill it today, add to it what you put in yesterday, adjusting for how much you drove it since you put gas in last night, and see what you get. More of an empirical approach than one involving actual knowledge, I'll admit.
