'94 Aero engine starting to run badly

During the shopping run this morning I stepped on the gas at
70 km/h and then very little happened in the field of accelleration. Instead the engine began to run erratically, feeling as if it was
sometimes misfiring. The "Check engine" light came on. The boost guage did not go further than straight up, after that the engine
started to run badly again. Idling was rough and unstable. According to the computer fuel consumption doubled. When I got
home I saw that the exhaust poured black smoke. I switched off the engine, had a brief look onder the bonnet and decided to
put it in the garage for further inspection. When I turned the car to get it in nose first (reducing the risk of getting suffocated by
the exhaust fumes) suddenly everything appeared to be normal again. The "Check engine" light was off as well.
This spring I replaced all small-diameter vacuum hoses so the chance of a vacuum leak is small. On first inspection all hoses
were in place and in one piece. I can't help feeling this is a problem caused by a bad electric connection somewhere. Do the
symptoms relate to a DI cassette about to go on the blink? I'll check the connector and the plugs this afternoon. Any other
suggestions?
TIA,
Alex
