The auto tranny is a bit of a weak spot on the 9000. If it is original at 112K miles, it is reasonable to think the transmission may need major work sometime in the near future. When I buy an auto 9000, I always cook into the price the cost of a tranny replacement. If it happens, I'm covered; if not, I'm that far ahead.

You just may have a whinny pump, a pump that will keep whining, but more importantly, keep pumping, for another 100K miles. If so, no big deal, it's just one of the other noises the car makes as it flies down the road. Frankly, pump failures aren't high on the list of reasons why transmissions die.

It may be that sometime in the next 30K miles or so you may need a new transmission. Maybe the pump, but maybe a blown clutch pack or a zapped torque converter. It is a 10 year old car with 112K miles - thing break. And if it does, call up Erikkson transmissions and get a nice rebuilt. Yes, it'll probably cost around 3K installed (maybe a bit less). But by then you'd have a whopping $7K in the car, which would still be a decent price. And a car with a fresh transmission.

You've bought a car for about 10% of the price of a new one - or about the cost of the typical Premium Option package (leather, nav unit, sunroof) on a new car. All cars require maintenance, and all cars break at one point or another. It is unreasonable to buy a decade old car and expect nothing to be wrong with it. Do you really think there is a large supply of late model 9000s for under $4K with nothing wrong? Really. Instead, realize you've got a great car at a great price. And eventually things will break on it. One may or may not be the transmission.

Instead, congradulate yourself on getting a great car at a great price. Enjoy the heck out of it. Maintain it, and fix things when they break. If you want to keep the car cheaply, don't drive it. All cars lose money. But where else are you going to find a car that goes this fast, is this comfortable, and can carry large kitchen appliances?
