Hello all,
Thursday naight, after a nasty storm, my wife went into a ditch and buried the front end pretty solidly in mud and water. After being pulled out by a tow truck winch, the auto tranny would not engage. Checking the dipstick, it was overfilled and looked "watery". Got towed back to my garage.
Saturday morning, I pulled the drain plug and filter. The first thing out was about 1/2 gal of muddy water. The filter was clogged with mud. The rest of the fluid was milky pink.
I flushed it and cleaned the filter 6 times before I got clear fluid and a clean filter. I had it up on stands while running through the gears. The wheels didn't turn while in gear until the third flush. But, at the end of the day, it was running and shifting and not making any loud obnoxious noises.
I didn't drive it until this AM. Took it for a spin on the highway. Everything was fine except it needed some coaxing to get to 4th. After parking, I noticed it was leaking where the housing meets the engine. It's pretty bad and seems to be much worse when the car is running. I took it out to get the mud washed off, fill the tank and pick up some more ATF, maybe 5 miles mixed city and highway. I'd say I lost a quart during that time. Pretty major leak...
I'm guessing it's the seal for the shaft that the torque converter is attached to? Is this a doable process, or should I be looking for a new(er) tranny. I've done an A/T swap before, so I can do it, but it wasn't a lot of fun, it's messy, and I'd have to shell out for a tranny.
Before I forget, it's TCS car, so it has the different cable. Is that something I can just switch to the new tranny?
Any advice, including the honestly offered "forget it, it's dead", appreciated.
