Your statement about the base stock is incorrect. The first number is not an oil weight, and an xWy oil does not start out as a x weight base stock. The first number is simply a measure of how the oil flows at a specified low temperatur. Once it reaches operating temperature, the oil behaves as its specified weight. Any oil can have viscosity breakdown, but to assume that 5W40 will break down easier, more quickly, or a greater amount than a 10W40 is false. In fact, a 0W40 synthetic will hold its viscosity much better than 10W40 or even 15W40 conventional oil. Synthetic oils do not depend on additive packages to "fortify" up to a higher weight oil. All you're doing by putting in a minumum 10Wx oil is making cold starts more difficult, and increasing wear on the engine before warm-up. Of course, if you live in a warm climate, it doesn't matter. For those of us who have winter, a 5W40 or 0W40 synthetic is a better way to go.
