Roof Rack mounting trick

After years of putting racks on my 9K's, I tried something new this morning and it made a big difference. I keep my rack intact for our two bikes, so I lift the whole thing over the roof and then attach the mount points.
Today, I put a 12"x12" piece of carpeting (soft side against the paint) over the area just above where the mount point is under the door's upper lip. Then I put the rack on, with its four feet each on a square of carpet.
It was then simple to mount the points, one at a time, starting with one of the non-adjustable ones.
The operation took about three minutes all told, about half of what it does when I wrap each "foot" in a pad so that the car won't get scratched.
If anybody else has an even better approach, I'll be glad to hear it. Used to keep the rack on all the time, but recently gas prices have driven me to taking it off after each weekend bike excursion.
