Engine roughly at times - Possible cause?

My '96 LP Turbo 9000CD manual generally runs OK except after 3200 rpm the usual engine hum is replaced by a loud pulsating engine noise. At low speed and low rpm (like driving around a parking lot)the engine runs roughly and sounds as if it's about to stall. Plugs are new. I've tried various grades of fuel. Engine mounts are sound. Could it be the direct ignition catridge? Any suggestions?
