I had a bad gasket and it still produced great compression. A leak down test would be more accurate for determining the cylinder condition. What sold me on the hg was when I pulled the plugs and put a light into the holes. Rotating the pistons to TDC, #1 had black sludge. The others had smooth dry soot on the pistons. Water would leak into the cylinder on intake stroke and clean the carbon off the piston.
Also it would overflow the coolant resevoir, blow coolant hoses...
I vote head gasket or warped head. Especially concidering the previous over heating. Not a bad job, I would do it again if I had to.
