because if you decide to buy a 9000 there's a huge fund of knowledge, information and help here. End of plug.

The auto transmissions do have an iffy reputation but remember a few things. One, this is a board for people with problems, so that's what you read about - many auto transmissions last a good long time. However, 125k miles or so could be a time to expect trouble on a 200 bhp CSE. Second, there are quite a few things that can be repaired without even removing the transmission so don't despair if you find a problem. Third, manual transmissions have problems too! And fourth, the ZF tranny is a very good match for this particular car, and turbo+auto=lots of fun if you are into that sort of thing. Sometimes characterised as "point and shoot". It's much nicer and more controllable than the typical electronically-controlled auto box.

Having said that, if the auto is obviously faulty when you test drive the car, don't walk - run.

Look for anything out of the ordinary - slow or slurred changes, changing up too early, jerky changes, won't go into gear, whatever. And take a look at the transmission fluid: it should be nice and red on the dipstick, if it's brown and burned you ar looking at trouble, expensive trouble.

To be honest, a 1996 car is going to have the sort of miles on it this one has. Later cars seem to be better built than earlier ones (sales ceased in 1998).

The warranty give you time to get the car to a good dealer or (preferably) independent specialist for assessment. If you post your rough location someone will probably recommend one (if you're near me, go to Kenny at Avon Saab in Bath, but I have an idea I'm the wrong side of the Atlantic for you).

Finally, you absolutely need to follow the link to Quasi's site which has useful stuff about buying a used 9000. Good luck if you decide to go for it!
