I haven't replaced these myself, but the Haynes manual gives it a "one wrench" symbol which means they think even I could do it.
You support the tailgatop fully open with a suitable prop. Then, to quote Haynes, "prise the retaining clips from the balljoints at the upper ends of the support struts, then carefully lever the joint off the spigot on the tailgate. On earlier models, the strut joints are secured in position by steel spring clips, which can be prised off using a screwdriver.
"Repeat this operation at the lower end of the struts, then remove them from the vehicle.
"Warning - ensure that the struts are fully extended by keeping the tailgate propped open, otherwse they may extend suddenly when released from their mountings.
Refit the struts by reversing the removal procedure."
Usual disclaimers, and take sensible precautions but it doesn't sound too problematic.
