Hatch won't shut at top: not my wet dream

Hi All,
I just picked up an '89 9000 5-door (275,000 miles and looks/ drives great) from my father who drove it for 10 years. I am new to the 9k world but am already very impressed by its reliability, performance, and sophisticated features!
Major concern: **The rear hatch sticks up at the top when closed.** There is quite a gap that no seal can cover. This is especially evident on the passenger's side. I can push down on this top lip to make it flush with the body, and can see only very minor play in the hinge. There appears to be no problem with the mounts and all are tight. Repositioning them fore or aft makes no difference. Also the latch is secure and does not bind or push door when closing.
This is not a replacement hatch. My dad says he noticed the problem some time after he may have forced the hatch door to close on an over-sized load. Is it possible to bend the hinges to the point where the top edge stands up? Going through the car wash is now a new experience (I left out the "water in trunk" query to avoid feedback on drains, seals, etc)...
Help, there are no good explanations in the archives. Has anybody had a similar problem or found a solution?
Thanks in advance,
Matt (9k newbie)
