Respectfully have to differ here - my '97 handbook says 1.0 mm (+0.1/-0.2), which is 0.8 to 1.1 mm. The handbook also specifies the 7ES rather than the 7ES-11 - are the latter made with different electrodes so the ground is dead level at 1.1 mm? Well, as long as we have to adjust gaps by bending the earth electrode, we're stuck with the possibility that the gap will be uneven. I honestly don't know - is the right gap with non-parallel electrodes better than the wrong gap with parallel ones?
NGK's UK site only lists the 7ES-11 for the 2.3 turbo these days: but just because that's all they offer it doesn't mean the handbook is wrong, it just means they are looking to advance the technology (viz. Iridium, V-groove, semi-surface discharge or whatever) and rationalise their range and stocks of older models accordingly.
Dr Boost advises 1.1mm as I remember but there is a spectrum of opinion across the range .9 to 1.1 and although it's nice to have a definitive answer, people's experiences suggest that cars vary.
It does underline the need to check gaps on new plugs before installation. I just opened my spare box of 7ES plugs to see what they looked like, and the one I pulled out was gapped to 0.8mm and the earth electrode was definitely angled down.
Finally, going for 1.1mm will mean checking the gap regularly as it's at the limit of Saab's specified range.
