You can keep driving. There won't be loss of performance even to the point the car will be shrouded in smoke eventually in my experience. Now you see only a puff of smoke coming to the front of the car when you stop at an intersection. It will get worse over time. Soon enough the amount of smoke will increase, until it will be shrouded in smoke.
I am cheap. I wait till the symptom gets a little worse to replace it with a used turbocharger. One from a junk yard costs about $200 to $250. My experience is they won't sell you a bad one. Testing a turbocharger is quite easy. Just spin the shaft by hand. You should not feel any lateral or longitudinal play of the shaft. Of course how much remaining life you get out of a used turbocharger is anyone's guess.
It took me about four hours to replace it. Quite straight forward but just takes time.
