I had the same problem years ago in my 9000. Pulled out the resistor and installed a radio shack replacement. The wiring harness connecion was totally fried. Plugged it all back together and everything worked great. For three days. Then I got a whiff of ozone and smoke through the vents and the fan crept up to high and stayed there.
I then went to the junkyard and found a good controller with pristine connectors. I chopped out the controller taking both sides of the connector with me. Paid $12 for it. Got home, spliced it in, and it worked flawless for years.
The issue (I think) is that the connector gets loose, wiggles, causing frequent arcing and lots of resistance (and heat) at the connector. This heat quickly travels down the big black power wire and fries the controller.
