A lot of auto mfrs don't recommend rotation (and by that I mean moving the tire from the location it was originally installed) because, with service intervals typically at 12K miles or more, if you wait that long to rotate the tire will be noisy and possibly 'feel' different in its new location until it's worn in. The unknowing customer drives out of the service bay, gets ten miles down the freeway and senses something is odd, and the dealership gets a comeback. They don't like comebacks, when it's (a) on their dime and (b) something they can't do anything about anyway. Far easier to let the tires wear out and sell the customer a new set.
Rotation - whether across the car or just front-to-back - is a good thing if you can do it often enough - 6K miles is IMO a good interval for both oil changes and rotation - to keep the tire from wearing in too permanently at its previous location.
Bill Davies notes what happens when you don't - on most FWD cars you wear out a lot of front tires.
Directional tread patterns are supposed to shed water better when running in one direction, and sometimes they're quieter that way as well, but I have no problem running them 'backwards' if I'm not expecting a lot of rain.
Asymmetrical tires like the PZero are another story altogether.
