I've done it.
Personally..
ME...
and with all the money and the trouble...
I wished I hadn't.
If i had just sold the car with the auto transmission, gotten one that was 5-speed to begin with, and put the money into performance parts... I would have had a much more stable, reliable, and faster vehicle.
I had a 1990 9000 turbo, bought for $2500 at 90,000 miles...
auto trans failed at 98,000 miles... something like that...
very painful...
loved the car...
and decided to attempt a swap.
$1600-ish for a remanufactured transmission
$200 clutch
$200-$400 in assorted conversion parts, including NEW clutch cylinders, lines, hoses... etc...
you need new axles... auto tranny axles won't work...
and you need the INTERMEDIATE SHAFT CARRIER BRACKET...
didn't do that the first time on mine, stripped out inner drivers as a result 3 times...
and probably a lot of stuff i'm forgetting.
It was just not worth the trouble though, in the long run, i wish i had a 5-speed car to start with.
