Time for a new engine?! Posted by Daven [Email] |
Hey all.
My '92 9000 turbo recently began idling REALLY rough. Until that point it had been running really well, very fast and smooooth. I had just replaced the selenoid on the false bulkhead, both breather check valves, and all vacuum lines. No vacuum leaks to be found before and after the rough idle.
I took my car out to my indie's shop and used his pressure tester. In order from cylinder 1 to 4 I got these readings; 150, 150, 165, 70. The spark plug in number 4 looked both burnt and wet, coated in unburnt fuel and/or oil. The plugs for cylinders 2 and 3 looked tan and dry and plug 1 looked brown and dry. So my thought is that I have a cracked head, blown head gasket or a worn piston ring for cylinder/piston 4.
I'm wondering what the hell is wrong with my engine, because I have cracked two heads on it in less than 20k miles. I installed the current cylinder head (with 130k miles on it), after refinishing the bottom, along with a new gasket set about 10k miles ago. The head before that cracked after only 8k miles. I installed that head after my original head cracked with roughly 140k miles on it (the whole engine is roughly 40k miles younger than the car because it was replaced under warranty around 40k).
I'm very careful with oil changes and have used ELF fully synthetic oil for as long as I've owned the car (75k miles & 4 years). The car has both Swedish Dynamics performance chips and boosts to the end of the red, but I honestly feel I don't over-work the engine. I only ran base boost for the first 2k miles after each new head & head gasket. Could there be an issue with my engine block, causing all these heads to crack so quickly?
I'm considering buying another engine from a '93 CSE turbo TCS with 175k miles, driven by an old lady who has had all the work done by my indie mechanic friend for the car's whole life. I would then take it apart and clean the oil pan of any possible sludge, have the head refinished, replace the valve seals, all gaskets, timing sprockets, timing chain, and chain guides. Maybe then all my headaches will subside for a while.
Anyone have any comments? Please let me know what you think the issue might be. Why am I cracking all these heads?
