Hi: Wifes 1996 9000CSE w/94,000 miles, automatic. Has always run perfectly. Beginning yesterday am it began to run rough and threw a CEL.
- Starts fine.
- Idles and runs rough. Power really is not too bad, still boosts fine. This is not like stalling and stumbling, just rough.
- I tried counting the CEL flashes. If I am doing this right there were different sequences, including 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, and perhaps 13 flashes?
- I didn't have much time last night, but did quickly pull the DI. I noticed that two of the towers on the black shroud on the bottom of the DI have cracks/split the full height of the tower. Also signs of light oil present at these cracks. Is this the likely culprit?
- I looked for vacuum leaks / hose problems and did not find any. As I noted, boost really seems OK, am I safe in thinking this is probably not a vacuum related problem?
Finally, for future reference, are there any reasonable OBD2 readers that are more than generically useful on these cars. I've searched the board and seen references that it really requires a dealer/factory "Tech II" reader. A google search led me to the Innova 3130 (see link below) that says it retrieves OBD2 DTCs: Generic Codes (P0, P2, P3, and U0) / Manufacturer Specific Codes (P1, P3, and U1). Their website has an area where you can input codes that the reader doesn't directly translate. Any thoughts on how useful this might be?
.
Thanks for any guidance. Paul
