The exact opposite is true. I don't know where that idea came from (maybe the idea that you get what you pay for?), but the fact is the higher the octane rating of the gas, the lower energy per volume it contains. As mentioned below, there are other variables so the difference may be negligible, but there is no way you're going to come out ahead in mileage with premium gas. I've verified this in my car with pretty extensive experimentation.

To the original poster, highway driving is the easiest on the engine. If you don't care about the power, just put in regular gas. Mid grade would be a waste of money as well, IMO.
