assuming it is the normal 5th gear problem, where the gear strips out at the shaft, and the shaft being the harder material, you simply put on a new, or good used gear.
Shop, yeah, probably $500+- to get to it and fix it if that was the problem.

How much does the SHIFTER move??? like is it really flappy?
Shift couple can be easily found using a partner, have the partner shift the car(while off) while you look under the hood for the coupler....
While not exactly, the closest I can think of, is it looks like a DOG BONE about 3-4 inches long. It is most easily seen from the driver side, and should be noticable when moving...
If it seems like the 2 parts are comming apart, you can use a few good zip ties at either end of it to sandwich it back together. Then see if it goes into 5th.
