The starting circuit on the 9k is quite straight forward. The starter is directly hooked up to the battery positive post by the thick red cable. The starter solenoid is the only gate keeper stopping the juice flowing to the starter motor. A yellow 14 or 16 gage (I think) wire connects the ignition switch to the starter solenoid. When you switch the ignotion key to start, one 14 gage red wire from the battery (to the ignition switch) directs current to the yellow wire to the starter solenoid to open the flood gate.

Your starter should be good because of the intermittent no start. Next time you face a no start situation, I bet you won't get any voltage at the yellow wire to the solenoid. I suspect your ignition switch is going south. But this is not a cheap item to throw at the car.
