It either goes into gear or it doesn't. It's a bit of a mental exercise to lay under the car and put the shaft through the gears, but but you really need to do it to find out. You could put the car on jackstands, select each gear, then crawl out, start it up and run it in each gear. In any event, 3rd and 4th are on the same shaft.
