this is really the first thing you should do. I whine from behind the rear seats means the pump is running. it doesn't mean that you can drag-race it, but at least it should make the car idle. Some pressure at least will make it to the fuel rail.
Pumps usually go south ' from a standstill' as it is harder to get it spinning than to keep it that way.
If you have experienced hard/ no starts of late it may still be the pump. Test it.
if it works go further upstream: relay. I personally would not think this is the primary suspect, for the same reason as the pump: over time relays may find it increasingly difficult to close, but once closed they don't 'open' just like that unless the trigger current would suddenly drop.
To me your situation sounds more like a CPS failure. The fuel pump relay is kept engaged by the ECU. The ECU decides on this based on whether it thinks the engine is turning over or not. For this it uses the input of the CPS. CPS's tend to go under high temperature and therefor can shut down the fuel pump in full flight. And not only in a Saab I can tell you...
