I have owned the '94 since November '99 It had been dealer serviced to that point (67k miles) with SAAB semi-synthetic Turbo oil. I used Mobil 1 at next oil change and have used fully synthetic ever since. I'm not too fussed whose I use, Mobil 1, Amsoil, Castrol 10w40 or 5w30, but change the oil twice a year. This car is modified (ECU, exhaust, intercooler, suspension, springs, bushes) but is a weekend car really, covering just 3-4k miles between these oil changes. I don't push the car until it has warmed up properly or near the end of a journey - in between these times it can get lots of exercise ;-).
I have only owned the '97 for a couple of years and that gets a similar regime, though it is my daily driver and gets ragged from time to time. Previous owner serviced car regularly also using synthetic oil.
Both are auto's and get oil changes every other year (remove the drain plug/bolt near the pump to get most of the oil out - draining via the filter only drains about half of the oil). The '97 had to have governor seals last year - probably won't last though as governor casing was (still is) very worn.
Secrets to success? Deal with stuff as it happens, drive with mechanical sympathy (you can still drive hard just not harsh)
