Cathy -
Back in my mechanic days in the 80's we used to have a really fancy fluorescent dye / black light system that worked well - but the real success came in a more rudimentary method.
We would drain the system about half way (air is compressible - and the remaining coolant took up some of the compressible space). Using a radiator pressure tester, we’d pressurize the cooling system to 8-10 PSI (typical is 10-12 PSI). Any leaks were evident with a constant "Hsssssss" coming from the leak source - and a length of heater hose stuck to the ear made a rudimentary stethoscope in case it was hidden.
I don’t know if there is a pressure test adaptor for the Saab expansion tank easily available (but they *are* out there). A coolant pressure tester runs about twenty to thirty bucks at any good auto parts store. Just a thought to cure the problem.
