Much to my dismay, I recently discovered that I'd been driving around without any rear brakes to speak of. After quite a bit of diagnosis, I've come up with a theory related to brake flushing, but I'd appreciate any feedback.
The current status is that I can bleed one of the rear brake lines, but NOT the other -- all it contains is air. I've traced the line all the way back to the valve body and it's empty (so in other words, it's not the caliper or the brake line that is clogged).
Here's what I think happened and how I plan to fix it:
--first, both my main ABS relay and the brake pedal "travel sensor" (only $280 - such a deal!) had failed. So the result was no power assist.
--second, I had flushed the brakes the old-fashioned way (an assistant doing the pumping inside the car). My theory is that some pieces of the rubber seals broke off (per other posts on the topic of manual flushing), and that at least one of those pieces is clogging or jamming the outlet valve inside the valve body.
--I've done all the appropriate electrical troubleshooting, and everything tests OK, with one exception. The diagnostic CD software that I'm using says resistance across the outlet valves should be 5 to 7 ohms. All of mine test at exactly 4.6 ohms. (All my inlet valves test at exactly 3.0 ohms, which is what they're supposed to be.) I find it difficult to believe that every outlet valve would "fail" to the exact same resistance ... but I'm open to other opinions).
--Therefore, my plan is to 1) rebuild the master cylinder, 2) remove the valve body and remove any debris from inside it, then 3) reverse-flush ALL the lines with compressed air to clean out any miscellaneous debris floating around inside them.
--Does all this sound like a reasonable plan?
Thanks for any feedback,
Graham
