I had the identical issue. About a half inch gap and no matter how much I wrestled with it could not close that gap. I installed one nut at the top and one bolt at the bottom and slowly and evenly tightened them. The trans drew up against the block. I then bolted up the starter and installed battery so I could start the car to test. Everything was fine. I wanted to make sure it was ok before reinstalling subframe and all the other stuff. Make sure tranny is well supported if you do this. I used a jack and some wood blocks under the tranny. Also, reconnect shift linkage. Good luck!
