My local autoparts store tells me that the check engine light is for the downstream O2 sensor. eeuro wants 219.90, Autozone wants 217.99 for the same part (Bosch 13395).
A couple of questions:
1. How should I remove the old one? I found it and it sits on top of the cat toward the exhaust end. Looking at the pics and what I was able to observe from under the car, it does not appear to thread in. Is it a friction fit? The car is not my daily driver, so if it needs some penetrating oil overnight, that won't be a problem.
2. Why did it go? I'm not sure of the life expectancy of the cat. Is this a sign that the cat needs to be replaced as well?
3. I can get a bosch "universal" type for the car at less than half the price of either of the others. I'm not a pauper, but $130 feels nicer in my pocket than theirs. From what I've seen, the plug at the other end of the sensor is difficult to get at. Has anyone had experience either way?
Thanks.
