No it is not absolutely necessary, especially if the system is still pressurized. The conditions that would trigger replacement are catastrophic failure of the A/C compressor that dumps metal bits into the system and opening the system to the air (specifically water vapor)for any length of time. If it is a dry day and you only have the system opened up for the time to replace the compressor, then it should not be a problem. Pumping down the system with a vacuum pump for 45 minutes should boil the water out of the system and rejuvenate the receiver/drier.
