i have used oxy acet, air acet (like most plumbers use) and propane.
oxy acet is the one to use, if you have it and know how to use it. it can change the metal if you keep it on too long, but so can anything else.
propane works but is slow. the beauty of oxy acet is that the heat goes in faster, so the part and surrounding parts don't get as hot. a wet rag is good insurance.
whenever you use a torch, have a spray bottle of water nearby to put out the undercoating fires. that stuff drips like napalm!
