Your statement of, "...catalytic converter which seemed very very hot...".
Well I don't have a magic bullet fix here - but digging back to my mechanic days of the 80's tells me that there is definitely an ignition miss. The cat getting hot is the extra fuel passing into it and burning - kinda like an after burner.
Bottom line is you have an ignition problem, causing unburned fuel to overload the cat - turning it into a blast furnace.
A couple of places to check.
* Ignition coil - are the contacts tight? Are the wires good? Do you have a spare coil to try as a replacement test?
* Was it raining or humid outside? At night - wet the wires with a spray bottle and look for blue arcs - That is an indication of bad wires.
That's about all thet comes to mind initially...
