you will see a cool clamp used to maintain an AC in the engine compartment of a Saab 900T. If you cannot get things fixed that way, I use another method to replace hoses.
Now, I just bought an AC fittings crimper (Atco 3700) and I am looking to see what diameters of thin walled Copper and Aluminum and steel, and brass piping corresponds to the differing outer diameters of the #6, #8, #10, and #12 A/C hoses.
Once I can get that figured out, I will have an even more effective way to ensure my repairs of old systems stay tight to pressure, as I will crimp tubing over the repairs with a tang that hangs out that can be seperately clamped down to the ALuminum hose to prevent the rubber hose from blowing apart from the rest of the system.
Right now, I use a Dremmel with a 1/32 cutting wheel(and safety glasses!!!) to make 4 cuts (1 down each side) of the Aluminum crimped retainer from the rubber hose to within 1/8 inch of the other side where the retainer hits the Aluminum tube.
I then insert a flathead screwdriver into the crotches of the cuts and gently twist to open the 4 sections like the petals of a flower. I twist off the old hose.
I lube up the new one with R134a type oil and force the hose down to the Aluminum retainer hilt. I then use 3 (THREE) AC type special hose clamps on each side. I fit the clamps over the 'flower petals' of the Aluminum retainer. This prevents the hose from slipping off. The special AC hose clamps are stronger.
Best,
C
