Not sure where that came from - think it's something your end! Let me try to justify what I said, for what it's worth.
I had a '93 CSE for five years and took it up to about 160k miles - it was really great but I experienced lost of small problems including corrosion in the wiring, overheating/head gasket problems and so forth. My current '97 appears much more reliable and better built. There were major engine revisions in '94, plus the '93 Trionic system was something of a one-off. The car is fourteen years old, your mechanic says it's shot (though you may well disagree) and newer cars are very cheap to buy. Leaving it to stand for a year and a half won't have helped, even in California. Finally (and this is the personal preference bit) I just like the hatchbacks.
So, if it can be fixed cheaply, great but if I were in your position, liking 9000s as I do, I'd then trade up to a newer car - but it's your call! Hope you didn't mind me chipping in - you did ask for opinions, there's no right answer.
