My wife was driving our 98 9000 around town and hit an old RR crossing and came down on the other side. No metal scraping noises she said. Funny thing is that both airbags went off! Didn't hit a single thing. I took a look under the car and no obvious recent damage sure, a few scrapes on the plastic underbelly from the past 9 years but...I am stumped. When A/C or fan is turned on...getting some funny noise/vibration that was never there before.

How could this have happened? I was always under the impression that the airbags would only deploy when the sensor was hit hard...like a front-end collision. But this seems they are acting like a mercury switch...just going off when the angle of the car reached a certain degree! Maybe I am just confused.

So - what am I looking at cost wise? Obviously, I need 2 new airbags (she wants to keep it safe so getting replacement airbags is a must)...any other parts involved? Control modules, sensors, etc? Unfortunately using my EPC and GenuineSaab.com's part # lookup for prices the dealer charges about $1300 for passenger and $800 for driver's airbag. I might get more lucky at a wrecker or dismantler.

Of course, we are doing the whole insurance deductible vs. out of pocket mind calculation...vs. even maybe selling as is and getting something else. Any hints/ideas/tips???
