The first, as Ari is describing, and is common on this board, and the second, where the pump motor is running but there is no pressure. I've had both.
The first, Aero was dead in the garage and would not start. Pounded on tank, and it started fine, but when I shut it off it would not restart. Ran through tests, and correctly identified fuel pump.
The second, I was driving along, and the CSE just stopped. Tried spare DI, checked fuses, etc, and had it towed home. I had a spare motor, so just changed it out without further testing. The car did have 170k... Before installing new motor, I put 12 volts across just to make sure it ran. Then I tested the old pump- it ran too! But it did not seem to have any strength. I suspect that the pumping mechanism was worn out, but the motor still going.
Just a thought which may confuse the issue. By the way, if you do need a fuel pump, the motor exchange is a $70 not too hard option.
