I'll bet that when the car doesn't start, if you turn the key to ON, you won't see any dash lights (battery, ABS, etc.).
The ON position drives the +15 bus - that bus powers dash lights, and oh by the way, the fuel injection system and the ignition. So if the dash indicator lights (and EDU) aren't on, you can feel confident that the fuel and ignition systems aren't powered, either.
This is usually due to the +15 contact in the ignition switch failing. Typically it shows up first as a hot start problem (contact resistance is higher when the contacts are hot), but can show up anywhere.
The good news is that you can replace the ignition switch (electrical part) without having to touch the key (lock cylinder). Just drop the clamshell from around the steering column, and the ignition switch is held onto the back of the key cylinder with two allens.
