90 vs 97 motors and tranny interchangability? Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 07:22:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi All,
I am the proud owner of two 9000's. The first is a 1990 9000 2.0L turbo 5-door, B202 with an auto tranny. The second is a 1997 9000CSE, 2.3L high pressure turbo 5-door with an auto tranny. The 90 has serious frame/body rot and has been taken off the road. I am in the process of parting it out. So far I plan on keeping the recently replaced blower motor (the one in my 97 is going bad), the heated mirrors (bad driver side defrost on the 97), the DI cassette, seat heater that still works, radio, eq, switches, exterior body lighting (for e-bay), ACC unit, and a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff. The 97 is in really nice overall shape. Both have auto transmissions which, to my understanding, are generally less reliable than the manual transmissions though I've never had a problem with either car. I plan on keeping the 97 for a while.
My question is this:
Would it be possible/practical to keep the engine and tranny out of my 90 for use as "spares" for the 97? Are they a direct bolt-up swap? I bought both cars used and if I had to replace the engine or transmission in the 97 I would have a hard time justifying the major expense. 9000's are very common around here (NH) and you can find them for a good price. If they are direct swaps, I'll keep them around. I understand that the engine management controls are completely different. I would expect to have to re-use the intake manifold and a bunch of other components from the 2.3L, assuming they bolt up. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for looking at my post!
Gregg
